A refugee girl and her mother, who just landed on a beach near Molyvos, on the Greek island of Lesbos, on October 31, 2015, after crossing the Aegean Sea from Turkey, are seen through the window of a vehicle as they are given a ride by foreign volunteers to a processing center. Local and international volunteers welcome the arriving refugees with food and medical care and dry clothes before the newcomers proceed on their way toward western Europe. Their boat to Greece was provided by Turkish traffickers to whom the refugees paid huge sums.

The Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) Speakers Bureau consists of individuals with great familiarity and strong connection with LIRS mission that can inspire audiences to walk with migrants and refugees as they seek a new beginning in the US. The Speakers Bureau is a network of people from around the country –former refugees, migrants, Lutheran Pastors, LIRS champions-who are committed to attending events and speaking on behalf of LIRS in their local areas. These events may range from community meetings, to church services, to events on college campuses, and more. Representing a variety of backgrounds and experiences, members of LIRS Speakers Bureau are equipped to speak to an equally wide array of audiences about the mission of LIRS. Whether the member is Lutheran pastor who can bear prophetic witness to the Biblical call to welcome the stranger or a refugee sharing their own personal struggle to open hearts and minds, the Speakers Bureau fulfills the important task of engaging local communities in the welcoming movement.
